CHURCH CHAT

Church Chat March 4, 2008

THINGS COMING UP THIS WEEK:
**09 March from 4-5 PM in the Johnson Crutchfield class (Room 223) there will be a planning meeting of the "Habitat in the Park" group that are planning Garner church's participation
in this fundraiser event.  Proceeds from this event to help building a Habitat home in the Garner area.

WITH 1,199 TAUTED MEMBERS
shouldn't our church should be supporting at least three (3) children in the below advertised program???
The Methodist Home for Children has cared for children and families for more than 100 years.  It provides community-based youth homes, foster care, adoption services, substance-abuse services, family based counseling, and child care throughout North Carolina.  It takes a thousand dollars to complete the care for one child for one year, so in an effort to raise these funds the Methodist Home for Children has developed the "1K for 1 Kid" campaign

In response to this campaign we are offering a mission challenge to all the boys and girls.  We challenge the boys to raise $500 and the girls to also raise $500 to help support a child at the Methodist Home for Children.  The first group to raise $500 will receive an ice cream party.
Here are some of the ways you and your child can help us raise money to help support a child at the Methodist Home for Children:
*Bring Sunday school offering.  The children's Sunday school collection for the next three months will be collected for this cause.
*Attend Sunday school.  The children will visit the adult Sunday school classes once a month for next four months for a "loose change" collection to help them reach their goal.
*Join Us for Vacation Bible School on June 20-22.  The VBS mission offering will go towards our support of a child at the Methodist Home.
* Make a monetary donation.  If you would like to help the children reach their goal of $1000, please make a check payable to Garner UMC marked for Methodist Home for Children.

"HEY, KIDS!! YOU GOT GAME????"
Can you name all of the books (Old & New Testaments) of the Bible?  I offer up a challenge to every child at Garner UMC.  It is the "Great Book Challenge." This offer will be good throughout the entire year. You can try as many times as you like to complete this challenge, but you may complete it only once in each category. To win this challenge you must be able to recite, from memory, all the books of the Bible in order.  There are three categories:  The Old Testament Challenge, The New Testament Challenge, and The Great Book Challenge.  If you complete the challenges, you will receive 10 Bible bucks and a certificate (or ribbon) to show that you were indeed up to the challenge. You will also win a prize that is far more valuable. You see, by studying God's word you are on your way to storing up knowledge and wisdom that will last for eternity.  When you're ready for the challenge just let Carlene know.

FOOD OF THE MONTH:  Until we get the new item for March in this category, PLEASE continue to bring in February's food of the month: jars of peanut butter OR jelly (not necessarily in the same jar).

"UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES!"
Is the water situation in our area all that concerning or is it a bunch of "fluff?"  This is not to fear monger but rather to let people know that conservation of God's resource of water is for REAL.  Our church's HVAC people called on Monday and advised that they would be coming to do the routine maintenance of cleaning the coils on our chillers (the things that cool the new building AND sanctuary).  He stated that he would be using a power washing company (he knows this company well and the owner is a Christian) out of Harnett County (gets their water from the Cape Fear River and NOT Falls Lake).  What led Buddy (our HVAC guy) to get the power washer from Harnett County was when he called the city of Raleigh water department and asked them about cleaning the coils with city water.  The water department stated, "under no circumstances" are we to use drinking water to clean something outside...........Water conservation is for real!!
Please make a note of this!!!

"HEY MA, IT'S MARTHA LILES ON THE PHONE!!!!"
These are words that practically strike utter fear in the hearts and minds of most people.  HOWEVER, to lessen this "call of terror," if a person would go on and fill out a Time and Talent Survey, at least when you are called to the phone because Martha Liles is calling, she will be calling to ask you to do something that you actually WANT to do!!!!  So get rid of those,
"Martha call jitters," and fill out a Time and Talent Survey, either by getting a copy from the wall slot outside the copier room OR go on the church's web site and fill one out there!!!!!  With a filled out Time and Talent Survey the words, "Hey Ma, Martha Liles is on the phone!!" will have NO power!!!!!

WELL, IT'S OFFICIAL NOW............
All the "big dawgs" have been advised (we think/hope...), but after several years of service Church Office guru Kathleen Roth has turned in her letter of resignation.  Kathy's last day IN THE OFFICE will be on 13 March.  She will continue to help out, behind the scenes for a few weeks after this, during the transition period and then she is like four day old chittlins'........
she's outta here!!!!!!  We wish Kathy all the best in her new adventure in life and we gonna have some MASSIVE shoes to fill!!!!!!!!  Congrats and GOOD LUCK to Kathy!!!!

IT'S NOT 09 MARCH!!!  IT'S NOT 09 MARCH!!!
The date for Wake Interfaith has been CHANGED from 09 March and we will be doing our first of two sessions of Wake Interfaith starting on 06 April!!!!  For all those folks that had previously signed up to do Wake Interfaith this coming Sunday,
PLEASE look at your calendar and see if are available for the 06 April date!!!  If so, go on and let either Patty Moore,
Lisa Nickalson or Amy Chalk know TODAY!!!!!!  Thanks for your supporting this communities response to homeless families!!!!!

HOLY LAND SLIDE PRESENTATION
There will be a photo presentation/program on the last Holy Land Pilgrimage.. The program will be in the Christian Life Center on Sunday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m.  You are invited.   Thanks, Jack Benfield.
