ORANGE BOXES APPEARING.............

October is here, which means it is time for GUMC to think ORANGE as in bright orange UNICEF Boxes!  Each family at Garner UMC can take home a box (or two or three) for a month long collection to assist children around the world.  Learn more about UNICEF's efforts to help children around the world by visiting www.unicefusa.org  or use this link:

U.S. Fund for UNICEF :: U.S. Fund for UNICEF - UNICEF USA

Get your box this Sunday, then return it on October 26th.  THANK YOU!

DUMP YOUR JUNK!!!!!
Down in the court yard a "fencing off," of an area has already been completed for you to start bringing your yard sale items!!!  This yard sale will benefit the child care workers for your church's ESL nursery.  We really need to see a HUGE increase in donated items for this event.  PLEASE help the ESL program's child care survive!!!
Another way we could do this is if 9 of you gave $100.00 each.....which is easier...
dump your junk or 9 of you give $100?????  Need'cha!!!!

AFTER "BLACK MONDAY" OF THIS

past week, most all of us are "dealing with a loss...."  but some folks may be dealing with more than a stock or money loss.  Pastor Chuck has some Biblical answers to some questions that folks dealing with a loss may not have thought of.   Here's Pastor Chuck with all the details of his next study:  In your next church chat, would you please announce again that my next Bible Study will focus on "Dealing with Loss", focusing on the many shapes of 'loss experiences'--loss of life, divorce, job, retirement, health, wealth, empty-nest, relocation.  We will meet on three Sunday afternoons, November 2, 9, & 16.  If you are interested, please call the church office, or Chuck (538 2855).  We need at least eight to register for the Bible Study.  Thanks. Chuck.

IF THE ENTHUSIASM GETS

any higher around here you folks are going to put several staff members out of a job!!!!  And to the one of you that responded to the plea below, we thank you, but out of 1200 members we were looking for the number to be at least two (yea, I know....we dream big!!!)......Let's do this one again.......Aversboro Elementary School has invited Garner UMC to partner with them through a program called "Hand in Hand".  There will be several opportunities for us to share God's blessings with the students and teachers at the school. At this point we are looking for volunteers for 2 roles:1) Be a prayer partner for a staff member and send words of support and encouragement. 2) Serve as a mentor or as a SCOR reading volunteer with a student for 30-60 minutes each week. Please contact the church office and let Carlene or Martha know if you are interested in this outreach.

AND YET ANOTHER

great outpouring of support and overwhelming enthusiasm has caused the angels in heaven to be awed by your efforts.....and to the two of you that have responded to this plea we are grateful....but out of 1200 people we were hoping for a tad more than two.

So, let's do THIS one again as well......Our Saturday afternoon outreach program for the homeless in our community continues to grow, meeting needs right here in Garner.  Attendance has increased lately, to where we need more food available.  If you would be willing to provide a side dish 4 times a year (once every 3 months), please send an email to HOPEmeals@yahoo.com  Even if you would like to be a substitute and provide a dish occasionally, we welcome you, and need you to be a part of this ministry team!  Questions, or to step up and volunteer, please email or call Lee Ellen at 662-0206.  Thanks so much for helping provide HOPE.  Thanks, Lee Ellen.

SICK OF SEEING SOME OF THE

same old, same old articles for pleas for help.........I know I am tired of writing about them.......So let's help me get over my sickness of writing about them and your sickness of reading about them and finally DO something about them!!!  Don't make us unleash Martha...........General Sherman and "his march to the sea," will appear as a "buggy ride through the Southern countryside" compared to what will happen if we unleash Martha to drum up cooks for HOPE, praying people for school teachers, workers for The Refuge, etc., etc., etc.,..........Once Martha is "out of the bottle," she's like toothpaste..........it's gonna be difficult to get her back in there............Do you really want to be responsible for that???????

IN CASE YOU FORGOT....

here's a reminder about the memory verse for this week:  Sunday's memory verse for Little Apostles and Agape is:  "The Lord your God is in midst.  The mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness.  He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."  Zephaniah 3:17.  Parents, PLEASE help your child memorize this verse before Sunday.  Thanks so much, Jeannie Ledford.

FOOD OF THE MONTH:   Cereal

CORRECTION ON GOLFING
outing.......On the web page in The ConneXion and more than likely from it's very onset in Church Chat, it is/has been wrongly reported that the golf outing (scheduled for 14-16 November) will furnish Saturday and Sunday night lodging.....It should read
FRIDAY and Saturday.  Most of you knew this, but it should still be clarified that is FRIDAY and SATURDAY night lodging that is being covered.

WARM BLANKETS AND HOODIES
As the weather turns cooler for we who have a little something, just THINK how cool it turns for the homeless that your church serves each Saturday.  So to that end, the HOPE ministry volunteers are asking for USED blankets/quilts and USED hoodies.  PLEASE do not go buy new hoodies or blankets, just looking for gently used ones.......Any help you can offer for this would be GREAT!!!!

PASTOR SUSAN SENDS ALONG THIS CELEBRATION

announcement:  On October 12 come and join the church as we will be "Celebrating our past and dreaming into our future" with a covered dish supper at 5PM followed by worship with JOG Band and Rev. George  Johnson preaching.  There will be a nursery for infants and toddlers during the time of worship and activities for children three - fifth grade.  Please come and join the celebration.  Thanks, Susan.

AND NOW FROM THE

Stewardship chair:  Sunday is the beginning of our Stewardship focus.  Our theme this year is Looking Back & Dreaming Forward.  Each week during the month of October, we will have folks from our congregation sharing how Garner UMC has impacted their lives.  Our ministries reach far and wide and we will be looking back at some of those ministries that have been going on while we plan for the ministries of the future.  During each week of the Stewardship focus, their will be a new devotion focused on Stewardship.  This Sunday, a copy of this week's devotion will be in each of the Sunday School classrooms.  Electronic versions are/will be implemented VERY SOON!!!  We would also like to invite you to join a special celebration on Sunday, October 12, at 5 PM in the CLC.  We have a special guest speaking and the Journey of Grace Praise Band will be leading the worship in song.  We plan to kickoff the event with a potluck dinner. Please bring all the members of your family for a time of worship and praise.  And bring enough food for your family and perhaps a couple more for those visitors who may be in attendance.  Thanks, Amy Gregory.
