FIRE VICTIMS NEED ASSISTANCE
Cheryl Rand has advised that a student at Creech Road School and his family have been a victim of a house fire.  This family (with three children) have lost practically everything.  Cheryl or myself have an extensive list of things that this family is in DIRE need of.  Said list is too long to post here.  If you are willing to help with SOMETHING on this list, PLEASE, PLEASE let me OR Cheryl know and we will get you a copy of this list.  Before you discard this article....think if this were your family...
wouldn't you want someone to offer you a winter coat or maybe a pair of pants???
Please get in contact with either Cheryl or myself for the list.  THANK YOU!!!

ARE WE GOING TO THE REFUGE???

In the event of rain or other inclement weather as it pertains to the "go, no go" status of tomorrow's Mission Trip to The Refuge it is a good idea to be on a list somewhere, so that in the event that something changes Patricia can contact you and let you know.

In the event that you are on no list and have no idea how to prepare or if in fact there will even be a trip to The Refuge, please contact Patricia.  She is your contact person for DEFINITIVE and CONCRETE plans.  (Special Note:  Article below pertaining to this VERY thing......)

THINGS COMING UP THIS WEEKEND!!!!

***6 AM on Saturday morning, pulling out from church parking lot heading to The Refuge.  Sack a lunch!!  Water/Gatorade being provided for by the church!!!
***10 AM on Saturday morning United Methodist Women's General Meeting (see article below)

***Sunday School hour 3rd graders going around to Adult SS classes Trick-O-Treating for UNICEF.  Bring back your boxes for UNICEF!! (See article below).

***4:30 PM on Sunday afternoon the fun is put back in FESTIVAL!!!  This is a GREAT time to invite neighborhood kids to your church!!!!  See article below).

CURRENT NEEDS:

**Food of the month:    CANNED MEAT

**Still need a few more used/discarded/replaced cell phones for recycling.

**Still need dollar store children "trinkey-dink" prizes for children learning their Bible verses.

NOTABLE OBSERVATION:

"Over the past weeks and especially the last few days, I have had so many comments from various members of the Grady family in appreciation for the support our church's congregation and staff have shown them. I have so many times said "you are welcome---we are so glad to help". I have told them how GUMC folks that didn't even know them contacted me with offers to help. At the reception following Ivonne's memorial service, a family member from Miami told me about how she had gone back to her home and told so many people about "what a community we are at GUMC". She told her coworkers and her clients. She told me we are the kind of church that she would like  for her children to grow up in." Just and observation, Martha Liles.   Now this is the "nuts and bolts," of the faith.  Great things for Thee we have done, but none so great as when we "give a cup of water," in His name……" (Mark 9:11)

FOOD OF THE MONTH:  Canned meat

SIZZLING HOT PICTURES OF...

not really, but the Fall Festival needs some more volunteers to help run some of the games/booths and if I would have started off this header like that, many of you would not have read this article...ANOTHER few people are needed to help set up on SUNDAY MORNING AT 11 AM and then later that night, there will be need of volunteers here to help take down and clean up as well.   Need some more people to park out back and decorate their "trunks," for "Trunk-o-Treating" as well.  Let's make this one of the best Fall Festivals that the church's children and community children have EVER had!!!!!!  Thank you!!!

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN LEE ELLEN???

Lee Ellen is challenging us all with her UNICEF questions of late......I am 0 for 4 so far....But here is Lee Ellen with some more challenge:  What year was the first official Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF?  Congratulations if you knew that Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began over 58 years ago, in 1950.  Over the years, children have raised millions of dollars to help other children in need.  Remember to have your change available this Sunday as our 3rd graders Trick-or-Treat in adult Sunday School classes.  And remember to bring back your box this Sunday!  Thanks so much for caring.

THE CHURCH CAN EVEN DO UNUSUAL REQUESTS.....

Here at Garner Methodist Church customer satisfaction is our number one priority..........A good example of this was in the case of Dear Sister Sara Davis' homecoming service and reception.  Many of you might not have known this (most of us didn't until she passed) but Sara ENJOYED ice cream.  And so when

the family was asked what they wished in the way of a "meal," for the family (following her service), the family quickly came back with "an ice cream social."  So you know what Martha and her team of volunteers provided for the family...........An ice cream social!!!  Plain M&M's, Cherries in heavy syrup, dry walnuts, etc. were only some of the choices offered to the guests at Sister Sara's home coming service!!!  And from the reaction from those in attendance, I believe that Sara would have LOVED it!!!!  The family has been NOTHING but complimentary towards ALL acts of kindness you ALL have shown them since Friday past when Sara passed.  Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ, even when it ain't "usual."

THINGS "COMING UP," THAT

you need reminding of:

***01 November from 9 AM - 3 PM, Craft Fair.  Many exciting things at this year's event!!!

***14-16 November Men's Golf Outing to the coast.  Deadline for sign up FAST approaching.  Call Ronald Williams TODAY (919-422-7070).

***SOLD OUT***14-16 November Youth Retreat at Camp Don Lee....***SOLD OUT***

IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED!!!!

Well it has been announced and their is "signage" the church throughout about it, but this year's Children's Christmas musical is entitled, "The Christmas Starr," (children's music by Annette Oden and arranged by Jeff Sandstrom).  This ministry offering will be held on 07 December IMMEDIATELY following the 11 AM worship in the gym.  This will be a "luncheon theater!!" so plan on inviting family and friends to this extravaganza and feed them lunch as well!!!!!!!!!!

NOT AS GREAT AS EXPECTED
that is the word out of the ESL yard sale bunch here on Saturday past....BUT......what were they saying??????  The could not stop giving PRAISES for the giving community here at Garner church!!!  Over and over again the words of compliments about the OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS, doctrine that PERMEATES Garner church were prolific!!!!  Not saying that this sale was a total bust.....BUT, it was not the amount that they sought.  If you wish to give SECOND MILE GIVING to the daycare for the ESL program here at your church, please mark your giving accordingly.

JUST LOOK AT THOSE COLORS!!!!!!
Oh yea, the fall colors outside are nice...BUT WOW!!!!  Below is the link to this upcoming month's newsletter and wait till you see the picture that Wanda has selected for the cover!!!  It just exudes regularity!!!!  But I will hush and not spoil the surprise..
For anyone that does not have Internet capability, they can get their black and white copy out in the usual places around the church this coming weekend.

WOMEN OF THE CHURCH!!!!
Remember that we are having a general meeting on Saturday morning, October 25, at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Classroom.  This meeting is being held for general discussion and planning for the Craft Fair on Nov. 1, the Senior Luncheon on Dec. 9, budget concerns and plans and ideas for our UMW for 2009.  This is a Very Important Meeting but it should not last long.  I hope that many will be able to attend; if you are not able to, please contact your Circle President to pass along any ideas or questions you may have.  Thank you, Betty Jo Creed

LOOKING BACK AND DREAMING FORWARD:What a great month we've had visiting with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ through testimony and fellowship.  We've shared the experiences of individuals who have been touched by the ministries of Garner UMC.  We want to continue to share God's love and make God's love real through the upcoming months and years just as we have in the past.  It is time to consider our commitment of our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our services to God's church.  Please read the attached devotion (Harnett County lineage folks that's the little blue line at the bottom of this page.  Simply click on it.....)  and consider your pledge for 2009 prayerfully.  Thank you,  Amy Gregory. WHAT CAN I DO???I read the Trustee's reminder about different aspects of the physical plant in Tuesday's Church Chat (and it is also in this month's "The ConneXion" that is linked from this e-mail as well), but what are some ways I can help??  If you come up during the week and see a door to the sanctuary open and nothing going on in there CLOSE THE DOOR!!!!  We are going to run VERY little heat in there this fall/winter (during the week) like we did VERY little A/C during the summer in there during the week.CUT OFF THE LIGHT!!!!  Folks are for ever more walking into a room cutting on the light getting what they need and walking out....leaving lights just'a burning.  Sunday's (or any day really) when you are one of the last ones in the building, start cutting off lights....don't worry if you cut the light off on someone that did not want it cut off, they will tell you........Bring a sweater.....Just as was directed last year, we will be running the thermostat two degrees cooler this fall/winter.  It does make a difference.  In the gym, (Trustees has put up new signage on the light switches in there) cut on only the lights you need.  "ALL ON," is rarely needed for events in the gym.  Lower scaled lighting is usually sufficient for most events in this area.  There are some REAL simple things we can ALL do to help out on these savings.  If you have other ideas, let one of your Board of Trustee members know.......We all in this together!!!  AM I LOSING MY MIND????Did I not see something about Pastor Chuck doing a new study coming up on something or other???  No, you are not "losing" your mind!!!  You did see something about this and ironically it is about "Dealing with LOSS!!!!"  But in this case the loss may be death, empty nest, money, health, etc.  If you would like to know more about this new study by Pastor Chuck, here is the link: http://www.garnerumc.org/events/Killian%27s+BIBLE+studies.docIf you want to know EVEN more about this study, get with Pastor Chuck and he can let you in on more........ONE MORE TIME ABOUT THE FALL FESTIVAL!!!Fall Festival this Sunday, October 26th starting at 4:30.  Come out for outdoor and indoor games, hot dogs, trunk r treating, and lots of fun.  We still have a few needs, so if you able please donate bags of candy, bring your car for Trunk r Treating, or run a game station.  Please contact Kat Lewis for further information or to let her know if you can volunteer. Thanks!!!!  Carlene. READERS NEEDED:As we partner with Aversboro Elementary we really need volunteers to tutor or read with a child at Aversboro Elementary for just 30 minutes a week.  There will be a brief training session for those who are interested at Aversboro on October 28th at 1:00. Please contact Martha or Carlene in the church office if you are interested or have questions.  Thanks, Carlene!!! AH—ONE AND AH—TWO….The first practice for the Youth Creative Arts performance will be October 30th.  There are still parts available for any youth or adult that was not able to audition last week.  Any youth 6th grade and up and adult that would like to be a part of the fun and exciting ministry for Christmas is encourage to be here Oct 30th @ 5:30.  Final auditions will be held first and practice will run until 7 PM.   WHAT IF IT RAINS??????The Refuge work day is on rain or shine for this Saturday.  Sammy has called and said he has plenty of work that can be done inside while we wait for the early morning rain to move out.  Right now the sign up sheet is very empty.  We need more volunteers to get the work done.  Call Patricia 413-1505 or email to let her know you plan to volunteer. YOUTH AND TRUCK-O-TREAT!!!!

The youth will be decorating a parking space so gather all your decorations and creative ideas together; bring a bag of candy and meet in the downstairs parking lot on Sunday at 6:15 to decorate our space.  Come in costume and join in on the fun.
