this day, this separate article and THANK our Veterans for their sacrifices that they made to keep us free. This was no more evident to me than yesterday when President Bush and President Elect Obama met at the White House. Here was the start of the PEACEFUL and ORDERLY transition of the government from one man and his party to another man his party. In many countries in the world the only way that the "transitioning" of the government occurs is through the end of a bayonet and rifle of one rival faction over the other. A Veteran made this transition go easy, smooth and orderly yesterday. There are millions of more examples of what the sacrifices of Veterans have done for our great nation, so today, pause and thank God for our Veterans and if you see one of these brave souls, shake her/his hand and say THANKS!!!!!
The evening edition of The Men of Faith group will be showing a film on the rapture in room 221 starting at 7:30 PM. The EVENING Men of Faith will then be taking a respite until January 2009. At this time they will be doing Dr. David Jeremiah's exciting new series, "What In The World Is Going On." If you are interested in the Rapture video of this week, the up coming Bible study series from Dr. David Jeremiah OR any aspect of the evening Men of Faith, PLEASE either get with Bob Creed or Ricky Hines.
off for bringing your filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child!!!! There are brochures out in the gathering area on a specially marked table. When you bring back your shoe boxes you may place them UNDER this said table or to your rear (when facing the table) you may place your shoe box UNDER THE PEW in the gathering area.
FOOD OF THE MONTH:The featured foods for Garner Area Ministries for the month of November are canned potatoes, canned yams, and canned greens (collards, turnips, etc.). Please place your donations in the collection box beside the elevator. Thanks! Wendy Moore.
GRADY HELP!!!!!Now that Ivonne has passed, and the crowds have died down, it is the perfect time to show the Grady family that we are still here for them. With the weather turning cool, it is time to make soups, stews, chili, and those types of comfort food. When you make a pot, divide out a quart and save it for the Gradys. I have 32 oz yogurt containers waiting for you at the Holy Java. The lids have a sticker on them for you to label your soup, stew, chili, or whatever with what it is and who it is from. Just freeze it and either give it directly to the Gradys or give it to me and I'll get it to them. I have plenty of freezer space, so if the Gradys get overwhelmed, I can store it until the supply goes down. It would be wonderful if we could have sufficient supply to see them through the winter, at a quart or two a week. With the holidays, seasonal affective disorder and the recent loss of a loved one, the comfort of a hot bowl of soup, made with love by a church family member, can help soothe a weary soul! Questions? Call me at 662-1568 or email me at slh@pobox.com Thanks, Stacie Hagwood
MUST HAVE YOUR HELP!!!As is usual the case when budget crunches come many people decide that the church is within the top three places that they can cut back. BUT we can MAKE resources for the church by SAVING the church in resources. Cut out the lights!!!! After church on Sunday PLEASE ensure that lights are turned out ESPECIALLY in the Narthex where there is a MULTI lighted chandelier and other lights in this area that are almost always left on. Toilet paper that is near the end of the roll will no longer be removed and a new roll put on until the ENTIRE roll is used up. There are always TWO rolls in the dispenser so there will not be a time that a person will be without, but said person might actually have to remove the old roll and pull the next roll into place. CLOSE THE SANCTUARY doors during the week. We are running LITTLE heat/AC in this area during the week, so if you come by and you see a door to this area propped open....CLOSE THE DOOR!!!
DO YOU REALLY LIKE having the annual United Methodist Men's Ladies night??? If you are one of the 120 or so that do, then they need help setting up the room, cleaning up, making salads, setting salads on the tables, etc. There is a sign up sheet on the Methodist Men's Bulletin board out in the hallway beside the Fellowship Class. PLEASE sign up to help with this endeavor OR get with Bob Creed and he will give you a special assignment for your very own!!!!!!
BE YE WARNED.......Most of you reading this list have very little idea the numbers, diversity and other demographics of people that traverse through your church on a weekly basis. And it is with this thought in mind that I impress upon the different groups/factions of the church to NOT put things in common areas (gathering areas, Narthex, hallways, etc.) and expect them to be in their present state or even, still there when they come back the next Sunday. The odds are GREAT that this is NOT gonna happen. So, save yourself some pouting and poked out lips and DO NOT leave your displayed items in the gathering area. ANOTHER great thing to remember that a table, whether it be a plain table (with nothing on it) or decorated table or the like, becomes a "catch all," for folks to sit on, leave empty drink cans/water bottles and other trash etc. Just trying to save some of y'all some grief.........be ye warned.
THE YOUTH WOULD LIKE to extend a special thanks to all the folks that have gone with them on their youth sponsored mission trips to The Refuge this year. On Saturday past, several men from the United Methodist Men went down with the youth and assisted the youth on several projects. And with this help "the bridge to nowhere," aka "The Honorary Tim Warren Plank Road Expressway," WAS completed!!!! Also goodly strides were made at the farm house. The youth are so thankful for all the adults that assisted them this year in so many of these endeavors at The Refuge. As soon as we get some warm days forecasted in early 2009, look for more ways that you can assist the Youth in their mission to this great cause!!!!
GPS AND THE 50+ CROWD!!!
We are pleased to announce the formation of a new group within our church: The GPS! This stands for "Garner Pairs & Spares" and is targeted to adults aged 50 and older. For couples, at least one spouse must be over the age of 50. Our focus is on in-reach: getting to know our fellow church family members, having a good time, doing fun things, and making new friends. We have exciting ideas for the coming year, including picnics, movie nights, concerts, and travel and we hope you'll want to be a part of this dynamic group!
The first event we have planned is an evening with Elvis! Keith Henderson presents "Illusions of the King" at Linshire by the Pond in Fuquay-Varina on Satruday, February 14, 2009. Tickets are $25 and includes a country buffet dinner. We are ordering 35 tickets for our group. This show is usually sold out, so we cannot guarantee that we can order more. To make your reservation, contact Ina Wiggins at 772-3292 or Dora Aman at 779-4445 before December 1.
To find out more about GPS, see one of the committee members: Dora Aman, Marjorie Barefoot, Terri Leeman, Sandra Thompson, Raymond Wanchock, and Ina Wiggins.
