Service

Throughout the Bible, God calls people into service.  To name a few, we have Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Saul (who became Paul).  Not all of these servants were perfect—in fact many of the servants were hardly that excited about being called into God’s “army.”  But they went---and God provided the help to all who had a willing heart.  God wants to make a covenant with us that he will be with us to the end.  Our part of the covenant is simply to be willing servants.

We need to have a willing heart to serve.  As a part of the Covenant Prayer which John Wesley asked his Methodists to confirm each year since the year 1780, he said

I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things
to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

Even though we are blessed at Garner UMC to have a wonderful professional staff which works extremely hard as a team, it is important to remember that every member of the Church is in fact a minister.  The word minister means “servant.”  So, let us all think about how we can serve.  By the way, we all can serve in some way.  Listed below are some of those ways, but you may think of others and you may already be involved with other valid ministries in the community (which we would like to know about).
Take time to look at these specific ways in which you may be service to your Lord and to your Church.

I will support this Church with my prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness!
The scriptures are quite clear that all Christians are called to serve him and His Church in practical ways.  We are told in the Book of James that faith without works is dead.
Assuming that the Lord grants to me good health,
