Haiti Relief Effort Update:
The owners of CGP, the warehouse where supplies are being stored, have asked that we not allow children under 16 years of age to come to the warehouse because of liability issues. We have had lots of young kids there for the last week and they have done a wonderful job of helping; however, the company is open for their own business and there are machines that could potentially harm the kids. They regretted having to set this rule, but we certainly understand.
We are in need of volunteers throughout this week. We will be open from 9 - 5 Monday through Friday. There are times when we don't have anything to do; other times there is a great flurry of activity. There is no way for me to assure you that you will have something to do when you come. I can say this with certainty, however: even if you come and there is not much to do, you will still be blessed just to see all the good that is being done.
You have all received the information about the conference-wide plan. Our focus will be food kits. Please note that if we are already doing something, we are to continue to do so. So, don't stop sending the medical supplies, health kits, water and food. Oh, by the way, we are chronically short of toothpaste, tooth brushes, hand towels and combs for health kits. Please help out if you can.
All food kids must be unopened; please strictly adhere to the list below:
1lb Bag of Rice
1lb Bag of Dried Beans
Canned food (fruit, vegetables, etc) - Pop-Top Lids only.
Please deliver these items to the church and they will be packaged and carried to the appropriate warehouse.
Monetary donations can also be to the church for Haiti relief efforts. Please deliver your check made out to Garner United Methodist Church to the church office and in the memo area include UMCOR.
DRINK A CUP OF COFFEE.....HELP UMCOR!!!!!
Through the conscientious efforts of your Holy Java Directer, Mrs. Stacie Hagwood, when you donate money to get a cup of coffee at your church's Holy Java coffee shop, you support UMCOR!!! Holy Java gets it coffees through an agency called
"Equal Exchange," coffee. Equal Exchange coffee in turn gives a portion of it's proceeds to UMCOR!!!!! Ain't that slick!!! Slurp some Joe and UMCOR gets paid........What a partnership!!!!!!
FOOD KITS............
Having received an e-mail from the Bishop (Gwinn) on 15 January and then again receiving yet another e-mail from The Raleigh District's Pastor of Missions on 17 January, Garner United Methodist Church will "officially," be working on getting as many Food Kits as it can get to the church and then onward to either Clayton or to the MERCI center in Goldsboro. AGAIN, PLEASE, if you are more comfortable doing the Health Kits or if you have Health Kits in the works BY NO MEANS is the Bishop or Pastor Jo Elaine saying that you cannot do Health Kits. They are only trying to have a multi-pronged approach here so that more Haitians with a diverse product may be reached. Just as an example, due to the language barrier in your church's ESL program and due to the magnitude of your church's Scouting program reaching out to the entire Hemlock District to ask them to do health kits, we as a church body are not going back to these groups to halt their forward progress with health kits. HOWEVER, in accordance with requests from both The Bishop of this Conference and the Pastor in charge of Missions in the Raleigh District, for those of you who can and are willing, let's see how many times we clean the shelves at Lowes, Food Lion and Kroger of bags of rice and dried beans, POP TOP cans of FRUIT and POP TOP cans of veggies in our quest for Food Kits.
For clarification on the food kits, please see below. Please note that the food does not have to be in bags, rather, sorted according to content. I am seeking a location now to receive the food kits. Any volunteers?
Let me take this opportunity to thank you all for your generous outreach. As of the mailing of this email, we have collected and palletized over 33 tons of goods in the Clayton warehouse alone. MERCI has done the same with slightly over 10 tons at this point. There is a guarantee of many more tons to come to both locations! When we fill a truck, it goes immediately to MERCI where we are collecting all our Haitian relief pallets. They will be shipped from that location.
Regarding shipping: we have already sent thousands of pounds of medical/surgical supplies to Haiti and they are on the ground there now. We have a core group of people working around the clock on the logistics, and are blessed to count Stop Hunger Now, the military, and various other
shipping agencies as partners in our efforts.
We will be in the Clayton warehouse through Friday evening at 5:00 at this point. We may be opened there Saturday and Sunday: stay tuned for the update on that. We need to vacate the current warehouse as there is a business operating in it. We are thankful to the owners of the business, Beverly and Tommy Dew. They have been gracious and generous and we simply could not have accomplished what we have without their warehouse and
equipment. Take a moment to write them a note to thank them: Beverly and Tommy Dew, 501 Atkinson, Clayton, NC 27520
Raleigh District is asked to provide FOOD ITEMS!! Here is what this entails:
Food Items - $12 Value
New, unopened & sealed bag of dried beans
New, unopened & sealed bag of rice
New, unopened cans of vegetables (any size with pop top lid)
New, unopened cans of fruits (any size with pop top lid)
We want to provide you with packing information for the food items:
Food can be boxed in containers with the weight being no more than 60 pounds.
If possible, please box items in "like" parcels (i.e., all bags of rice in one box, all canned goods in one box, all beans in one box).
Packed boxes should be no more than 60 pounds.
If you have already containerized your collected goods in another manner, it is fine. Take them to your district collection sites as you have containerized them.
This is only for the food items. Health kits, for those who have packaged them, should be place inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. For more information on health kits
BOOTS ON THE GROUND........
Several of your fellow members from GUMC heeded the plea from folks in Clayton to come and work at the packing center for items heading to Haiti. One such person was Terri Leeman and from what she observed and was told by District Missions persons in Clayton here is the very latest on what is and what is NOT needed in Clayton. Can you help out on this one???
Here's Terri:
NEEDED:
Toothpaste - 4 oz or larger, NOT travel size
Combs/Picks - sturdy
HAND towels
Nail files/Clippers - noted that they WERE including emory boards, but metal files are preferred.
Make sure toothbrushes are SINGLE wrap. The kind that come 3 to a pack can't be used because when you try to cut them apart, the plastic covering exposes the toothbrush.
Note: They already a lot of Health Kits that are incomplete except for these items, so they'd like to finish what they have already on hand.
DO NOT NEED:
WASHCLOTHS - they have more than they'll ever need and are looking for other groups that can use them
Any personal items or toiletries that are NOT on the Health Kit list - these just get tossed aside and are taking up space
Travel kits that include a toothbrush and travel size toothpaste - we have to add 2 more travel toothpastes to the bag before it can be sealed.
Clothing
Toys
Linens other than what is specified (blankets, sheets, towels are OK. Curtains, mattress covers, pillows, are NOT ok)
All of the linens must be in NEW or LIKE-NEW condition - please nothing soiled, stained, or excessively frayed. As Jo Elaine put it today, "If you wouldn't give it to Jesus to use, we're not sending it to Haiti."
From what I could tell, they're short on food supplies. Still need cans of any foods (not just vegetables and fruits) as long as they have a POP TOP. Bags of rice and beans (under $1 per bag at Wal-Mart) are also needed!
They have a great system going in packing/labeling boxes and loading them onto the truck(s). Volunteers are still needed, especially the rest of the week as folks go back to their "regular jobs" after Monday's holiday. I'm just hoping to keep up with Helen Little!! At 79, she's running circles around most of us!
Thanks for helping get the word out!!

Haiti Relief Effort Update:
- IN LESS THAN A WEEK!!! "YOUR" church of Garner United Methodist Church has sent down over 9 pick up loads of relief supplies to Clayton and MUCH of what you have sent is ALREADY IN COUNTRY AND BEING USED!!!!!
- On Sunday, a local dentist brought by TWO cases of toothbrushes to be delivered to Haiti......On Sunday AFTERNOON an e-mail went out from Mission's peoples within the District and you know what one of their biggest needs were......TOOTHBRUSHES!!! God was already in the midst of answering a need BEFORE the need was even spoken!!!!
- Spoke with someone this morning that has direct involvement with and direct knowledge of airport goings on at the Johnston County Airport (where some of the items you are donating are flying out of) and this person states that flights are leaving Johnston County and ARE getting the supplies into Haiti. It seems that so much of the focus is on the "larger," airport in Port-au-Prince and the smaller planes with supplies like you are giving are landing at two of the smaller air strips in Haiti. Then these supplies are getting right into their targeted areas. With this bit of news, I am wondering if when all this is said and done if it will not be confirmed that the thing that "saved Haiti," will not be so much all these large convoys/transports, but it will be these supposed "smaller supplies," that you are giving and are being flown directly into Haiti.....KEEP GIVING......YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!!
- Contingency efforts are ALREADY under way here at your church, that when they close the opertion down in Clayton (read Pastor Jo Elaine's message below referencing this) that we have already partnered with Fuquay UMC to deliver our supplies there!!! They have a large truck there on site in the church parking lot and things are put in it, and taken to MERCI in Goldsboro. We already have a volunteer in place that is to be taking things you give each Tuesday and/ Thursday (if twice weekly runs are warranted). So, even WHEN the operation has to shut down in Clayton, we are ALREADY on top of switching immediately to Fuquay UMC so that NONE of the items you give to direct relieft lies on the ground long, before it is shipped out!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE DON'T SLOW UP THE GIVING NOW!!!!!
