Lay Speaking Courses
February 13, 2010Raleigh District 2010 Lay Speaker Training
The Raleigh District will offer lay speaking courses as follows:
- Basic Course for Lay Speakers – February 13, 2010
The basic lay speaker training will be held on Saturday, February 13, 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., at the Methodist Building, 1307 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. The instructor will be Tom Walden. Registration fee $10, will include lunch.
Each participant should schedule an appointment with their senior pastor (if the church has more than one pastor) to discuss opportunities and specific plans for their service as lay speakers in the local congregation. (It is suggested that you make some notes from your conversation.)
Each participant should make some notes, it is preferred that this is done in a journal about their prayer and devotional time during the week: when, how long, resource used, and the contents of their prayer. Participants should be honest with themselves.
A post-class assignment may be required.
For more information on the basic course, please contact Tom Walden.
Pre-registration is required and must be mailed by January 29.

The advanced lay speaker training will be held on Saturday, February 20, 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., at the Methodist Building, 1307 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. The course will be taught by the Rev. Jim Mentzer, Director of Planned Giving for the United Methodist Foundation. Registration fee $10, will include lunch.
The class is titled “Lay Speakers at Worship” – a detailed look at how we worship God and why we worship the way we do. Participants will discuss their own church’s worship practices, learn how to become better readers of scripture, and try their hand at writing prayers. There will be both a pre-class and post-class assignment to provide the required 10 hours of instruction.
For more information on the advance course, please contact Jim Mentzer or by phone at 919-836-0029.

Ladies Night Bible Study
March 1, 2010Beginning March 1, the Ladies Bible Study will host an 11 week study and each Monday night during this 11 week span. This study is by one of the ladies favorite study providers in Beth Moore. The study entitled: "Beloved Disciple: The Life and Ministry of John" by Beth Moore, explores the life of the apostle John. Beth conveys that John had the God-given gift of seeing a larger picture and that his love relationship with Christ profoundly influenced everything he did and wrote.
As the other disciples were martyred one by one, John remained to write his sublime Gospel proclaiming Jesus' identity as the eternal Word of God. In his three letters John left a legacy of divine love to ignite the passion of future believers. And while exiled on Patmos, John recorded His risen Lord's glorious revelation of victory and hope. John referred to himself as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Just as Christ took John on a lifelong journey into the depths of His love, He will do the same for you. The Bridegroom's love is unmatched and inexhaustible, and He is waiting to lavish it on you, His beloved.
A Note from Beth
"Every disciple and early follower of Christ left a legacy for future believers. John's legacy was love. Perhaps like no other disciple, John understood that relationship is the point. Every command of Christ and call to obedience is to enhance relationship and place the recipient in a posture the Giver can bless. This study is about finding our way to the heart of Jesus and reclining so closely that our pulse begins to throb in tandem, loving what He loves and hating what He hates." -- Beth Moore
If you would like more info on this study, the who's the what's, the when's etc., get with Gayle Hines or Libby Frederick or any of the gals that attend this Monday night study.........YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!
