Bob Redmond - Pastor
Bob is a native of Covington, Kentucky. He is a graduate of Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky and Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC. He has been serving in the NC Conference since 1975 when he took his first appointment. He is married to Linda and they have two children---Alissa lives and works in New Orleans and Brad works and is a student at UNC-Wilmington. Prior to coming to Garner United Methodist Church in June 2007, Bob was the Senior Pastor of Seaside UMC in Sunset Beach, NC for seven years.
Susan
Hobbs - Associate Pastor
Susan has
worked in programming for children, youth and adults at Garner United
Methodist Church since August 1990. Prior to coming to Garner, she
was Program Director at Fairmont UMC for 12 years. She graduated from
Pemboke State University, now University of NC at Pembroke, with a
degree in Religion. She did her graduate work at North Carolina State
University with a Masters in Counseling. She attended the Local License
Pastors School at Duke in May of 2001, and is currently enrolled for
the Course of Study at Duke Divinity School. She is married to Bill
Hobbs, who works at Duke Medical Center in the Department of Engineering
and Operations. They have they have two children, Christy, who is a teacher and married to Derek, and Brian who is in college. In 2007, Susan became the proud grandmother to Kaylyn.
Carol Kamp - Accompianist
Carol has
been a member of GUMC since 2006, having moved to Garner in 2003 from her home state of Indiana. She received a BA in music education from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and was a church pianist for a small church in Indiana for 5 years. She was also a piano instructor for several years and has been an avid handbell ringer for almost twenty years. She is married to Harold, a native of Germany, and they have two daughters. Sylvia is the cross-country and track coach at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and Erika is a school teacher in Louisville Kentucky and married to Mark, a medical student.
Steven Wheltle - Music Director
Steven Wheltle joined the staff as Director of Musical Ministries at Garner United Methodist Church in August 2007. Steven is an experienced conductor, composer, arranger and singer who has served churches in North Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania and Maryland. He has a diverse educational experience from such institutions as the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Pensacola Christian College and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, among others. His teachers have included Marilyn Cotlow of the Metropolitan Opera and Aaron Copland. As a singer, Steven has been a soloist for numerous colleges including the United States Naval Academy and has sung under the batons of Lukas Foss and John Rutter. Steven is happily married to Carolyn and is the proud father of three adult children: Jessica, Kevin and Kandace.
Bill
McClure - Organist
Bill McClure has been a member of
GUMC since 1974. He became interim Organist in
November of 1999 and staff Organist in May 2000. He graduated
from Campbell college(now Campbell University) in 1972 with a BA degree
in music. He is married to Jean, whose helps him in many ways. Their daughter,
Kimberly, is a Freshman at Wake Tech community collage.
Carlene Lucas - Children's Coordinator
Carlene has been a member of GUMC since 2001. She is a graduate of Meredith College and is married to Robert. They have three children --- Tony, Haley, and Jordan. Carlene has been been very active in the church, especially in her role as Chairperson of Missions, prior to assuming the Children's Coordinator position in August 2007.
Chris Kelly - Worship Leader, Journey of Grace
Chris has been leading contemporary worship in the Triangle area since 1998. A graduate of North Carolina State University and active member of the Emmaus Community, Chris uses his professional theater and rock and roll background to create a vibrant and passionate worship environment at our contemporary service on Sundays at 9:45. “We don’t put on a show but we do strive for excellence in all we do musically.” Chris is married to Marcia and has two boys, Devin and Sawyer. Horses, dogs and fish, oh my!

Al
Sutton - Sexton
Al has been a United Methodist since 1964. He came to GUMC from Divine Street
UMC in Harnett County, NC. Al
has lived in Garner since 1985, at which time he became a member of GUMC. Al
and his wife Joy have two children and two mean dogs. Al has been the janitor
at GUMC since 1998.
Patricia
Suttle, Youth Director
Patricia
joined the staff as youth director at Garner in June 2003, moving here
from Hatteras Island. Patricia is married to Shannon Suttle and is
blessed to have him as her partner in ministry. They have a son Chris, daughter-in-law Stacy, and a daughter Melissa who is married to Adam and working on her graduate degree in Intercultural Studies. Patricia is the proud grandmother to Ethan. Patricia’s passion
is to see the youth of our church, and this community, challenged to
live a life radically committed to a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ, reach out as the hands and feet of Christ, discover the individual
gifts they have been given and how they can honor God with these gifts
and their lives.
Carol
Hunter -
Preschool
Director
Carol and her husband Robert and two sons Robert and Aaron have
been part of our congregation for several years. For the past eight
years, Carol has been a part of the preschool as a teacher and curriculum
coordinator. This year she has become preschool director.
Martha
Liles - Coordinator - Lay Ministries
Martha
and her husband, Robert and daughter Audrey have been a part
of our congregation for some time. Martha joined the staff on
a part-time basis in January of 2000. She is responsible for
developing and coordinating a variety of lay ministries, especially
to our visitors, new members and shut-ins.
